# Add Discount Codes to emails

Attach a Shopify discount code to your review request email to incentivize customers to leave a review. Takes about 5 minutes to set up.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**One code for all.** The app sends the same static discount code to every customer. It does not generate unique codes per order. To prevent overuse, enable **"Limit to one use per customer"** when creating the code in Shopify.
{% endhint %}

### How it works <a href="#overview" id="overview"></a>

The coupon is offered as a reward after the customer leaves a review. It is not sent automatically, the customer must claim it manually after writing their review.

Add a discount code on the Discounts page in your Shopify admin. For detailed instructions, refer to [this Shopify guide](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types).

### Setup: 5 steps  <a href="#setup" id="setup"></a>

1. **Create a discount code in Shopify.**

In your Shopify admin, go to **Discounts** and create a new code. For detailed instructions, check the [Shopify discounts guide](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types).

Recommended settings for a review reward code:

{% hint style="info" %}
RECOMMENDED SHOPIFY DISCOUNT SETTINGS

✓ **Type:** Percentage off or fixed amount off order (both work well)

✓ **Usage limit:** Enable "Limit to one use per customer" to prevent abuse

✓ **Code name:** Keep it simple and memorable, e.g. THANKYOU10

✓ **Expiry:** Optional. A time limit (e.g. 30 days) can add urgency

2. **Select the code in Reputon**&#x20;

In the app, go to the `Settings tab`, find **Reward coupon code for email**, and select the code you just created.

3. **Add the coupon to your email template**

Open the email template editor. Place your cursor where you want the coupon to appear, then click the **discount icon** in the toolbar. This inserts a placeholder that gets replaced with the coupon info when the email is sent.

#### Update the subject line

The app offers ready-made subject line suggestions that reference the coupon. Pick one or write your own. Mentioning the reward in the subject line is key to the CTR uplift.

**4. Customer claims the coupon after leaving a review**

After writing a review, the customer returns to the email and clicks **"Claim coupon code"**. They are redirected to a short form where they confirm their review and submit their request

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Coupons are not sent automatically.** The customer must actively click "Claim coupon code" and fill out the form. You then review and approve the request manually before the code is sent.

Every time a customer submits a coupon request, you will receive an email notification.

The customer will receive the following email after approval.

**Want to test the coupon on existing customers?** Use the Email past orders feature to send a batch to past orders right now. It's a quick way to see the coupon impact before rolling it out to all future emails.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://reputon.gitbook.io/reputon-help/customer-reviews-app/how-to/add-discount-codes-to-emails.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
